Chapter Thirty-One

Lucy Walker

The next morning Marcus and I stand side by side on the roof, our shoulders touching. We lace our fingers together as we watch the sun rise.

“Two weeks will fly by,” I tell him. The strong line of his jaw begs to be touched, so I pull my hand free from his and trace the angle of his face. My fingers brush his cheek, stroke his ear then move along his jaw down to his neck. Marcus wraps his arm around me and pulls me against him. I hold him tightly.

“Will you be okay today, not having spent time in your stone form?” I ask.

Marcus spends every night on the roof in his stone form. It’s the only way his kind—protectors—maintain their powers, energy, and good health. He spent last night with me after he finished his homework instead.

We laid in my bed, our legs tangled. While his fingers traced the outline of my face, his lips trailed small kisses on every spot his fingers touched.

“It’s going to be incredible for you, being around all those protectors. People just like you,” I said to him.

He kisses me now as the sky brightens. The birds chirp and sing their morning greetings. Down below, car doors slam and my neighbors leave for work or school.

“Two weeks. Worst case it runs a little longer, but I will be back,” Marcus says, pulling away just a little. His eyes meet mine. He leans down and presses his lips to mine.

“Hmmm,” I murmur as I kiss him back. His arms tighten around me.

I believe Marcus is telling me the truth as far as he knows it. The thing is… I don’t believe Camille will let him go so easily. On top of that, I don’t think her case is going to run all that smoothly given her crimes—not that I know anything about the criminal trial system—the regular kind or the supernatural kind. The miserable cherry on top is if Marcus changes his mind once he’s around his own kind. If he decides that he’s happiest around other protectors. Add all that together… I don’t allow myself to finish that thought.

Dylan and I have a plan for this week. One I don’t plan to share with Marcus. We need to figure out what Ella is up to and keep her from exposing me and the other supernaturals in my life. While I trust Katie, I need to make sure she keeps her lips sealed about everything I told her last night. Dylan promised to help me keep an eye on her.

I unwind myself from Marcus’s embrace. “I have to get ready for school.”

“Will you be okay today?” Marcus asks. He eyes my neck.

I have a handkerchief-type scarf wrapped around my throat that I borrowed from Katie—maroon and gold, our school colors. St. Aquinas sold them as part of a fundraiser two years ago, so it’s not like I could get a demerit wearing it. At least I hope not.

“My bruises? Or facing Ella who has probably revealed to half the school that I shoot fire from my hands?” I chuckle bitterly.
